Danish Food Tradition

Traditional food in Denmark is mainly consisting of meat, fish and carbohydrates, usually heavy and rich in fat. This because of its geographical location and the climate of long winters and moist weather. The countries agricultural past also adds up to it.

Dishes

Biksemad or Hashed Beef is often eaten and is served together with a fried egg and ketchup. Blodpølse or Black Pudding is a sausage is made from pig or cattle blood and is mixed with fillers like meat, fat, bread, sweet potato to name a few.

Smørrebrød is a famous Danish sandwich which is basically a piece of rye bread filled with different types of toppings.

Drinks

Coffee is always drunk in the morning for breakfast, preferably black and filtered. Elderflower drink is drunk, cold in the summer and warm around winter time.

And as the other Scandinavian countries, the Mead has a place in the Danish house.

Alcohol

Beer and especially the Pilsner type is a popular way to relax and socialize after work for many Danes. Denmark has a large Beer industry with brands like the world known brands of Tuborg and Carlsberg. The Danes also like sweet fruit wines and produces some brands of their own as Kir, a cherry wine and Solberry which is a wine made of black currants.

Desserts

As desserts simple ice cream or thin pancakes which are rolled up and served with a jam of any fruit is popular and common. Wienerbrød, a Danish pastiry is also known and widespread even though its name has nothing to do with Vienna.
